Loman ’10 to be inducted into NILCA Hall of Fame

7/2/2026 3:27:00 PM

Jim Loman, considered the father of high school lacrosse in the Finger Lakes Region, will be inducted into the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association Hall of Fame in October. The 1910 graduate of Hobart will be one of 13 inductees honored at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho, New York, at 6 p.m. on Oct. 17.

A native of Geneva, Loman played football, basketball and lacrosse at Hobart. Following graduation, he pinballed across the Midwest, working in South Dakota, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Ohio before returning to his hometown in 1923.

For the next 26 years, Loman taught and coached at Geneva High School. His football, basketball and lacrosse teams were among the best in their division and held their own against larger schools. Loman mentored several athletes who went on to become college All-Americans and four who have been enshrined in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Loman's GHS football teams never lost more than two games in a season. His basketball teams won 11 Finger Lakes League championships and the 1934 Sectional Championship. Loman directed Geneva's lacrosse team to a record of 75-24-5, winning nine championships with seven undefeated seasons. The latter is all the more impressive when considering high school teams often played college freshman teams to fill out their schedule.

Suffering declining health, Loman retired in 1949. He coached his final game, a 45-7 win for the football team over Wellsville, and was carried off the field by his players.

Loman passed away in Virginia in 1970 at the age of 85.

Loman was inducted into the Geneva Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. The main stadium at GHS, Loman Stadium, is named in his honor.
