Statesmen capture 2 silvers at Head of the Genesee

Race Results

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—
The Hobart rowing team brought home a pair of silver medals from the Head of the Genesee Regatta today. The Statesmen finished second in the men's collegiate eight and men's novice eight divisions.

The Head of the Genesee combines a 5,000-meter head race in the morning with a 1,500-meter sprint in the afternoon. The sprint time is tripled and added to the head race time for a total time.

The Hobart varsity eight—Reynaldo Kelly, Max Swagler, Andrew Cobb, Jack Trimble, David Roberts, Harald Zurakowski, David Grossman, Ryan Scully, and Coty Burges—produced a morning time of 16 minutes, 4.67 seconds that put them fifth out of 17 crews. The Statesmen's afternoon sprint time, 4:25.79, coupled with 30-second penalties accessed to Cornell and Marietta, allowed them to move into second place.

Mercyhurst won with a total time of 29:13.7, 8.34 seconds ahead of Hobart (29:22.04). The Cornell second lightweight crew was third (29:28.18).

The Statesmen second varsity eight and third varsity eight finished 12th and 16th, respectively.

"Overall I felt the varsity eight showed great determination going into the afternoon sprint race," Head Coach Mike Alton said. "They executed a strong race plan down the sprint course, taking advantage of a quick tailwind."

In the novice eight race was a head race only. Despite an equipment malfunction that cost the crew time, Hobart crossed the finish line in 16:56.9, 41.2 seconds behind Marietta and 27.6 seconds ahead of third place RIT.

The Statesmen novice eight was powered by Margaret O'Brien, Chris Smith, Conor Eagan, Alex Kent, Edward Witcher, Edward Amorello, Robert Shannon, Eamon Smith, Kevin Benz.

"We're looking forward to the Head of the Charles next weekend and testing ourselves against the challenging course and some more great competition," Alton said.
