WORCESTER, Mass.—The Hobart rowing team was in action on Saturday, competing at the Holy Cross Invitational on Lake Quinsigamond. The Statesmen took on Temple, Marist, and Holy Cross, racing in eights.
Competing on the 2000-meter Lake Quinsigamond course, crews experienced a 5-8 mph breeze, which produced a cross-tailwind over the course throughout the racing session.
THIRD VARSITY EIGHT
- The Statesmen's third varsity highlighted the racing, finishing second in their race.
- The boat was powered by Isabel Goldblatt-Hamilton, Jayden Dasher, Estel Justus, Panagiotis Giannakopoulos, Fletcher Grantham, William Walker, Cameron Nixon, Braden Hendrickson, and Cayden Hill.
- The third varsity began powerfully, breaking away from the other three crews in the first 500 meters. The men held the lead until the 1000-meter mark, as the Holy Cross crew made a move and began to row through the Statesmen. With 500 meters left, Hobart called for a sprint, which allowed them to hold off the Red Foxes and the Owls, but the Crusaders also called for their sprint in the closing stages of the race.
- The Statesmen's third varsity concluded their race with a time of 6:09.56, ten seconds behind Holy Cross.
- Sixth seat, Giannakopoulos commented on the third varsity's race and continued victories, stating, "Today's race was great, I'm very proud of where this program and this boat specifically is headed. Continued improvement and hard work is always needed, and there are definitely things we can improve upon."
VARSITY EIGHT
- The Statesmen's first varsity eight, which is receiving votes in the IRCA D1/D2 V8 Poll, took on No. 17 Temple, No. 21 Holy Cross and No. 23 Marist.
- The 1V was driven by Sam Hyman, Owen O'Connor, Charles Watroba, Colin Mester, Kiré Richardson, Chase Sneddon, James Feeley IV, Carlo Capitanucci, and Tibor Teleki.
- The Boat jumped off the start alongside the Crusaders. Not starting as energetically as the Statesmen had wanted, the Red Foxes and the Owls moved away in the first 200 meters. At the first 500-meter mark of the course, the Holy Cross crew made a successful move, breaking away from the Statesmen. In an attempt to move back into the top three, the Statesmen called for a sprint at the 1600-meter mark but made up little ground on Marsit, who had fallen behind the other two crews.
- The Statesmen finished fourth with a time of 5:54.69, four seconds behind Marist and eleven seconds behind Temple, the winning crew.
- Hobart's first varsity coxswain, Hyman, reflected on the race, stating, "Today was a lesson about the intensity we need to bring to the first thousand meters if we want to challenge crews like the ones we raced today. We've executed that intensity on race day before, but we need to keep making gains at practice as a unit. We have room to improve."
SECOND VARSITY EIGHT
- Hobart's second varsity was rowed by Ellie Dial, Trevor Beatley, Sam Peeler, James Faulkner, Alan Marusic, Nicholas Short, Álvaro Paulin, Clement Newbold, and Henry McComb.
- The Statesmen's second varsity leaped off the start, rowing evenly with Marist, Holy Cross, and Temple until the 350-meter mark, when the other crews pulled ahead. As the crews approached the 700-meter mark, the Hobart crew attempted to move back into the action but did not gain much water on the other crews. With 500 meters left, the second varsity sprinted, gaining some time back on their final time.
- The Hobart 2V earned a time of 6:10.4, 14.6 seconds behind the winning crew.
