North Fall No. 2 Results

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team earned a first place finish at the North Fall No. 2 hosted by Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. this weekend. HWS also competed at the Navy Fall Regatta and at the Captain Hurst Bowl.

In the North Fall No. 2, hosted by Cornell, the team was blown out by heavy winds on Saturday, completing zero races. Conditions were much better on Sunday and allowed the team to finish seven races in each division. HWS recorded a first place finish out of 18 teams. Sophomore Potter Hodgson and first-year Camille Conover won the A Division and first-year Mike Deady and sophomore Kathryn Moloney won the B Division.

At the Navy Fall Regatta, HWS came in ninth place. The team saw a variety of conditions with winds ranging from 4 to 25 knots between Saturday and Sunday which challenged the sailors. In the A Division, the HWS team of senior David Thompson, junior Chris Klevan, sophomore John Davenport and sophomore Catherine Pelo sailed to a ninth place finish out of 20 teams.

In B Division, junior Austen Anderson, sophomore Rebecca Liggins, Klevan, sophomore Bridget Nannig, and Davenport sailed to a seventh place finish. The wide range of wind conditions challenged skipper and crew combinations and called for many crew changes.

In the Laser Division, sophomore Tim Zacher sailed to a 16th place finish in C Division and junior Sam Blouin sailed to a second place finish in D Division. Blouin sailed very well all weekend and got more quality time in a Laser leading up to ICSA Nationals.

At the Captain Hurst Bowl, HWS sailors senior Sam Padnos, senior John Babbitt, senior Holly Huffine, and first-year Morgan Gould were greeted by strong shifty winds that created some challenging races. The races were dominated by large shifts, and sailors could easily drop 10 places in a beat if they did not play the shifts correctly. The HWS team found the conditions very challenging on Saturday, but saw a drastic improvement in the average finish for HWS in both divisions on Sunday. The team finished 13th overall with Padnos and Huffine finishing ninth in A Division and Babbitt and Gould finishing 14th in B Division.

Next weekend the team competes in four events, the Hoyt Trophy in Providence, R.I., the Stu Nelson Women's in New London, Conn., the MAISA Fall Open in Ithaca, N.Y., and the KP Fall Open in Kings Point, N.Y.
