The Hobart College Squash team will open the 2010-11 season competing in the 2010 Navy Round Robin with matches against the Midshipmen and Denison on Saturday, Nov. 13.
Carol Weymuller enters her 16th season as head coach. She returns 16 veterans and welcomes five newcomers to the team.
The Statesmen ended the 2009-10 season taking second place in the CSA's “D” division after defeating Northeastern and Northwestern in the Conroy Cup. Hobart lost just two players to graduation,
Teddy Desloge '10 and
Dane Evans '10.
Junior
Corey Kabot, sophomore
Daniel Pelaez, and senior captains
Grant Palermo, and
Luke Esselen are the top returners for the Statesmen. Kabot played 16 matches at the No. 1 spot last season. Pelaez joined Hobart for the second half of the season and posted a 7-8 individual record including a 7-6 mark at No. 2. He finished the season with a three-match win streak, and was named to the All-Liberty League First Team.
Palermo registered a team-high nine wins with a 9-13 individual record including an 8-5 record at No. 4, while Esselen played in the top three spots in Hobart's lineup last season.
The Statesmen will also look to senior captain
Carl Ranieri, sophomore
Edgardo Gonzalez, and junior
Kevin Kent for their experience and leadership. Ranieri played in 18 matches primarily in the middle of the order last winter. Gonzalez posted a 7-15 record, playing in the 5,6,7, and 9 slots., while Kent saw playing time at No. 7 (0-2) and No. 8 (3-6).
Juniors
Grant Bercari and
Willis Stephens will also return to the Statesmen lineup. Bercari was an All-Liberty League honorable mention, and posted a team-high nine wins and a 9-4 individual record. He finished with an 8-2 mark at No. 9, and also played three matches at No. 7 going 1-2. Stephens recorded a 6-12 record in the 7-9 spots in the order.

After competing in the Navy Round Robin, the Statesmen will travel to Franklin & Marshall on Sunday, Nov. 14, for a match at 11 a.m. On Nov. 20 and 21, Hobart will compete in the 2010 Liberty League Men's Squash Tournament taking on Vassar, Rochester, and St. Lawrence.
