3-point shooting gives Bombers edge over Statesmen

ITHACA, N.Y.—
The Hobart and Ithaca basketball teams posted similar numbers in nearly every statistical category except one. The Bombers converted 12 three-point shots to the Statesmen's five as Ithaca posted a 95-87 victory in Ben Light Gym tonight.

Senior guard Mark Bruce gave Hobart a 50-46 lead early in the second half, but the Bombers seized the lead for good with a 16-3 run. Ithaca hit a pair of triples during the surge.

Sophomore guard Stefan Thompson's traditional three-point play pulled the Statesmen within four, 73-69, with 6:29 remaining, but the visitors were unable to get any closer down the stretch.

Ithaca led by as many as 12 in the first half, but Hobart outscored its host 21-12 over the final seven minutes of the session. Junior forward Matt Pebole made a three to give the Statesmen at 43-42 lead with 34 seconds left, but the Bombers hit the final basket to go into halftime up 44-43.

Pebole led Hobart with 23 points and two blocked shots. Thompson added 22 points, including 8-of-9 from the free throw line. First-year forward Richie Bonney produced his second double-double in as many game, scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds. Senior guard Tim Llewellyn chipped in 12 points.

Ithaca boasted three double-doubles. Chris Cruz-Rivas had 28 points and 10 rebounds, Phil Barera threw in 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Sean Rossi notched 10 points and 12 assists.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 23, when they host Elmira. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 7 p.m.
