GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith swimming and diving team cruised to a 121-61 season-opening victory over Buffalo State in Bristol Pool. Sophomores
Heidi Gordon and
Casey Sherwin each produced a pair of individual victories to pace the Herons.
William Smith won eight of the first nine events before exhibitioning the final four events of the day.
Gordon won the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 27.45 seconds, 0.65 seconds ahead of classmate
Katie Stebbins, and the 100 butterfly in 1:04.99, nearly three seconds ahead of junior
Alisha Rexford. Gordon also swam a leg for the victorious 200 medley relay team that included first-year
Emily Morosky, sophomore
Jordan Hawn, and first-year
Lia Duffy.
Sherwin notched her victories in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. She enjoyed a more than 2-second cushion in the 200 free, touching the wall in 2:08.05, and more than a second margin in the 100 back, hitting the wall in 1:05.46.
The Herons also got wins from first-year
Mimi Mahoney (50 free, 27.06), junior
Kaileigh Fowler (1-meter diving, 167.35), and junior
Lauren Morosky (100 free, 58.49).
Sophomore Kaitlin Mergler posted the lone victory for Buffalo State (0-3) in the first nine events, capturing the 1,000 free in 11:04.88.
William Smith will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 9, when the Herons host Ithaca.
