Hobart oarsmen dominate RIT

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart rowing team, on the water for a second straight day, dominated RIT on the Seneca-Cayuga Canal. The Statesmen won all four races against the Tigers after splitting eight races at Ithaca yesterday.

"I was very pleased today with how all our boats executed their race plans against a very strong headwind and current," Hobart Head Coach Mike Alton said. "Three races over the weekend was a challenging way to start off the season and the team handled it very well"

The Statesmen novice eight of Wes Davis, Reid Johnson, Coty Burgess, Spencer McCormick, Rob Nanovsky, John Wasmund, Matt Bianco-Splann, Eric Ohnmacht, and Matt Hubbard won the day's first race in a time of 7 minutes, 34.3 seconds. The Tigers came across the line more than 13 seconds later.

The Hobart varsity eight, powered by Reynaldo Kelly, Max Swagler, Matt Scanlon, Jack Trimble, David Roberts, Harold Zurakowski, Andrew Cobb, Andrew Fosbrook, and Carmen Cimini, gained an early lead over RIT and steadily pulled away over the course of the race. The Statesmen recorded a time of 7:01.1, with the Tigers nearly nine seconds behind.

The second varsity eight race was the day's tightest race. Hobart's Harrison Goldberg, Richard Mable, Francis Craig, Dillon Nachbar, David Grossman, Ryan Scully, Gerry Samson, Eddie Crocket, and Bob Taylor traded the lead back and forth with RIT through the first half of the race, but the Statesmen turned in a strong final 1,000 meters to top the Tigers 7:09.08 to 7:13.7.

By contrast, the Hobart third varsity eight—Drew Coogan, Peter Nettl, Mark Wasmund, William Gore, Evan White, David Ansel, Peter Wasmund, Michael Hess, and Michael Copacino—got little resistance from RIT, pulling away for a 32 second victory. The Statesmen logged a winning time of 7:27.89.

Hobart will be back on the water April 10-11, when the Statesmen compete in the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J.
