Hobart novices honored by Liberty League

The Hobart rowing team's novice eight was named the Liberty League Co-Boat of the Week by the conference office today. The Statesmen won a gold medal at the New York State Collegiate Championships over the weekend.

The Statesmen qualified for the grand final with a second place finish in Saturday's heats. Hobart logged a preliminary time of 6:30.71, just 18 hundreths of a second behind Army. On Sunday, the Statesmen took revenge, beating the Black Knights by 1.3 seconds for the state championship.

The Hobart novice eight was powered by first-year Sarah Tanzer, Coty Burgess, first-year Reid Johnson, first-year Rob Nanovsky, sophomore John Wasmund, first-year Matt Bianco-Splann, first-year Spencer McCormick, first-year Eric Ohnmacht, and first-year Matt Hubbard.

Hobart has won eight boat of the week awards this season, including at least a share of each of the last three.

The Statesmen will be back on the water on May 9, when they compete in the ECAC Championships in Worcester, Mass.
