GENEVA, N.Y. -- The No. 25 Wheaton (Ill.) soccer team scored the lone goal of the game in the 65th minute to upset No. 4 William Smith, 1-0, in a non-conference game played at Cozzens Field this afternoon. It is the first loss for the Herons (5-1-0) this season. The Thunder improves their record to 5-2-0.

Senior Brittany Bergh scored her second goal of the season to earn the win for Wheaton. She collected the rebound after a shot by junior Ali Kopelman. Bergh's shot bounced off the crossbar and slid just over the goal line for what ended up as the game-winner.

The Thunder took control of the game early, recording a 7-0 advantage in shots in the opening 17 minutes. William Smith did even out the shots, as Wheaton held an 8-7 edge at the half. The Herons had an opportunity to break the scoreless tie with 3 minutes, 9 seconds left in the opening half. Junior Chelsea England sent a crossing pass to senior BreLynn Nasypany whose header went high over the net.

Late in the second half, William Smith had a few big chances to tie up the game. With 3:40 remaining, Nasypany took a free kick from right outside of the box. She sent a shot over the four person wall set up by the Thunder, but it sailed high over the goal. With 2:47 on the clock, the Wheaton keeper came out to play the ball, but England was able to collect it, and sent a shot at the open net that banged off the crossbar. Junior Kate Redmond also had a chance to score with 1:31 left, but her shot went just wide of the right post.

The Thunder enjoyed an 18-12 advantage in shots. The Herons held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior Amanda Davis finished with six saves in goal for William Smith. Wheaton goalie, first-year Maddie Allen, turned aside three shots.

The Herons will play another non-conference game tomorrow, Sept. 18, when they host No. 7 Williams at Cozzens field at 3 p.m.
