Dineo Mmutla scored in the 20th minute and the No. 2 William Smith soccer team held off Wheaton (Mass.) for a 1-0 win in an NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship second round match played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Herons advance to the third round where they will meet Middlebury on Saturday, Nov. 19.
The Lyons finished their season with a 16-4-3 overall record. William Smith will take on the Panthers next weekend. Middlebury defeated The College of New Jersey 1-0 in another second round match played today. The four regional hosts will be announced tomorrow.
The Herons improved to 18-0-1 and recorded their 18th shutout of the season, a new William Smith record. The Herons also tied the program record for wins in a season. Senior
Amanda Davis did not need to make a single save in all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons. She is now tied for fourth on the William Smith list for shutouts in a season with 12 and ranks second all-time with 43 career shutouts. Davis also ranks second in Heron history with 59 career victories.
At 19:20 in the first half, Mmutla scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season off an assist from senior
Kate Redmond. Mmutla got the ball in the box and made her way around a Lyon defender before drilling a shot into the back of the net. It was Mmutla's fifth game-winning goal this fall. She also leads William Smith with 22 points this season.

Chelsea England came inches away from making it 2-0 in the 62nd minute, when she fired a shot that sailed just above the crossbar. Wheaton had an offensive flurry in the 77th minute. Kiersten Luber took a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a Heron defender. Seconds later, a shot by Rachelle Rodman went wide of the right goal post. Senior
Jessie Tarantino also took away the chance for a Lyon player to break through the William Smith defense with a sliding tackle late in the second half.
Senior Erin Cawley finished with 10 saves in 90 minutes in goal for Wheaton.
William Smith out-shot the Lyons 27-3. The Herons recorded 11 shots on goal and did not allow Wheaton to put a single shot on goal. William Smith also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
