ITHACA, N.Y.—The No. 6 Cornell men's lacrosse team came out firing on all cylinders and held off Hobart for a 14-9 victory. The Big Red's Rob Pannell led all scorers with six points (2-4).
Displaying the balance and depth that carried it to the national semifinals last spring, Cornell had nine different players score goals. Roy Land, David Lau, Mike Bronzino, and Cody Bremmer joined Pannell with two goal afternoons.
Eight different players scored for the Statesmen (1-1) led by junior
Sam Miller's two goals and first-year
Cam Stone's two assists. Faceoff specialist
Bobby Dattilo dominated the X, setting a career-high with 18 wins on 24 restarts and scooping up a career and game-high 14 ground balls. He also scored a goal.
The Big Red (1-0) scored the first three goals of the game. Love interrupted the run, but Cornell countered with three straight goals, including two man-up strikes.
Tyler Smith made it a 6-2 game with an extra-man goal set up by
Reid Rosello at the 11:38 mark of the second quarter.
The Big Red scored the last two goals of the half to carry an 8-2 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Cornell came out hot in the second half, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter for an 11-2 lead. Hobart's offense finally solved the Big Red D, netting five straight goals, spanning the third and fourth quarters. Miller,
Jesse Mancuso, and Dattilo scored in succession in the final four minutes of the third.
Alex Caton and Miller's second goal opened the fourth quarter scoring to make it an 11-7 game, the Big Red scored three of the next four goals to squash any thoughts of a comeback.
In goal, AJ Foire earned the win with 11 saves, while Hobart's
Evan Kirk turned back 10.
Cornell outshot Hobart 45-31 and had a slim 31-29 edge in ground balls. The Big Red were 3-of-7 on extra-man opportunities, while the Statesmen were 1-for-4.
Hobart will make its debut at the all new Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation on Saturday, March 5, when Colgate heads to Geneva. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
