Weekend temperatures are not expected to climb above freezing in Western New York, forcing the Hobart and William Smith rowing teams to cancel their spring season openers on March 26 and March 27.
The Statesmen and Herons were scheduled to race at Ithaca on Saturday and at Rochester on Sunday. Ice on the Cayuga Outlet prompted the Bombers to abandon race plans on Thursday. HWS hoped to bring teams to Geneva for races on Seneca Lake instead, but Saturday's forecasted high of just 26 degrees forced coaches to scrub those plans.
Conditions are slated to improve only marginally on Sunday (high of 28), prompting organizers in the Flower City to call off races on the Genesee River.
Hobart spring season will now begin on April 9-10 when the Statesmen travel to Cherry Hill, N.J., to compete in the Knecht Cup. William Smith's campaign will get underway on April 16-17 with racing in Worcester, Mass., against Tufts and WPI.
