GENEVA, N.Y.—The Colgate men's lacrosse team scored seven straight goals in the first half to take a 7-2 lead, and held on for an 11-7 win over Hobart this afternoon in the Statesmen's home opener on the all new Bowsell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. The Statesmen are now 1-2 overall, while the Raiders improve to 3-2.
Six different players scored for Colgate. Peter Baum led all scorers with four goals. Jeff Ledwick posted two goals and one assist, and Connor Brown contributed two goals.
Four different Statesmen recorded goals. Junior
Sam Miller led Hobart with three goals, including the first tally on the new Boz. Sophomore
Tyler Smith added two goals, and senior
Mike White logged a goal and an assist. Sophomore
Jake Silberlicht handed out two assists. Junior
Bobby Dattilo won 12 of 22 faceoffs and a team-high five ground balls.
Hobart scored the first two goals of the contest. Miller and senior
Tim Bigelow each scored their third goal of the season in the opening 6:05. The Raiders then took control going scoring seven unanswered goals, spanning the first and second quarters. Baum and Brown tallied two goals in the run, and Ledwick capped the spurt with a man-up goal with 2:39 left in the first half.
Smith scored his third goal of the season with 1:20 left on the clock to make it 7-3 going into the break.
The third quarter was scoreless until Smith scored a man-up goal, his second tally of the day, with 6:38 on the clock. Then Baum and Miller traded goals to make it 8-5. Ledwick and Bredon McCann each found the back of the net for Colgate to close out the third quarter at 10-5.
Baum recorded his fourth goal of the day and 15th of the season with 4:42 remaining to stretch the Radiers' lead to six. The Statesmen would not go away quietly. White collected a pass from Silberlicht and fired a shot past the Colgate goalie for his first goal of the year, and Miller struck again with 3:13 remaining for the final.
In goal, Colgate's Jared Madison finished with 11 saves, and senior
Evan Kirk recorded six stops for Hobart.
Each team took 32 shots, and the Raiders held a slight 25-22 edge in ground balls. The Statesmen were 1-for-2 with the extra-man, while Colgate was 1-for-1.
Hobart will be back in action on Tuesday, March 8 when the Statesmen travel to take on Binghamton at 4 p.m.
