VESTAL, N.Y.—Hobart junior attackman
Sam Miller scored a game-high three goals, but Binghamton spoiled his second straight hat trick, defeating the Statesmen 11-5 at the BU Sports Complex this afternoon.
Hobart junior attackman
Chris Pedersen opened the day's scoring, driving to the right side of the cage and dunking home a point-blank shot for the only goal of the first quarter. It was his fourth goal of the season.
The Hobart defense, which shutout Binghamton over the final 37:38 in a 6-5 win in 2010, continued to perplex the Bearcats (2-3) through the first 20 minutes of today's contest. BU finally ended the scoreless streak at the 9:22 mark of the second quarter when John Clark scored the first of his two goals. The Bearcats won the ensuing faceoff and fired home another goal just seven seconds later to seize the lead and kick-start a 9-0 run that spanned the second and third quarters.
Binghamton carried a 5-1 lead into halftime and netted four unanswered third quarter goals, the last two man-up for an insurmountable 9-1 advantage.
The Statesmen (1-3) snapped out of their own scoreless drought when Miller found the back of the net at the 12:18 mark of the final frame. Just over a minute later, senior midfielder
Mike White ripped a shot from 15-yards out to make it a 9-3 game. Pedersen set up Miller at the 8:22 mark to give Hobart three straight goals.
With time running out, the Statesmen were forced to go to a 10-man ride to regain possession, but Binghamton was able to take advantage of the empty cage and sandwich a pair of goals around Miller's final strike in the last five minutes of the contest.
Tyler Perrelle had a team-high three points (1-2) for Binghamton, while three other Bearcats finished the day with two goals apiece.
In goal, Kraig Heston earned the win with 10 saves. For Hobart, senior
Evan Kirk produced 10 stops in just over 45 minutes of work, while sophomore
Jon Lawless turned back four shots in relief.
Hobart junior
Bobby Dattilo turned in another strong effort at the X, winning 11 of 19 faceoffs. He also scooped up a game-high nine ground balls.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, March 12, when Bucknell visits Boswell Field for the first of five straight Hobart home games.
