#4 Syracuse tops Hobart 13-7

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—
The fourth-ranked Syracuse lacrosse team outscored Hobart 9-2 during the second and third quarter on its way to a 13-7 victory in the Carrier Dome tonight. The Orange displayed its offensive depth with 10 different players accounting for its goals.

Hobart (5-7) got a three-point game from senior Tim Bigelow on a two goals and an assist. Senior Paul Reintjes, junior Sam Miller, junior Matt Campbell, sophomore Tyler Simmons, and sophomore Tyler Smith added solitary tallies for the Statesmen.

Junior Bobby Dattilo won 12-of-23 faceoffs and grabbed three ground balls, while sophomore Reid Rosello collected a team-high four ground balls. In goal, senior Evan Kirk made 10 stops in 45 minutes of work.

For Syracuse (11-1), Jeremy Thompson and Josh Amidon enjoyed three-point games, while JoJo Marasco, Stephen Keough, Jovan Miller, Kevin Drew, and Pete Coleman chipped in two points each. Joel White scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls.

John Galloway made five saves in 56 minutes to earn the win.

Amidon staked SU to the early lead with the first goal of the game, but Miller countered for Hobart with a low screamer from the right alley. Syracuse netted back-to-back goals, including the first of three extra-man strikes, to take the lead for good.

Bigelow closed out the first quarter scoring with a strong individual effort dodging past a pair of Orange defensemen for an in tight shot that beat Galloway to make it a 3-2 game.

Syracuse turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter, forcing seven Hobart turnovers. The extra possessions allowed the Orange to rattle off four straight goals and inflate its lead to 7-2.

The Statesmen ended the run when senior Danny Mullin scooped up a ground ball off an SU turnover and started Hobart on the fastbreak. Reintjes barreled right down the middle of the field and let fly a shot that beat Galloway at hip level for his first career goal.

Syracuse repeated its defensive pressure in the third quarter, again forcing seven Statesmen turnovers. Campbell scored the first goal of the half, collecting a ground ball in front of the SU crease and depositing his second goal of the season, but the Orange countered with five straight goals, including two more extra-man markers, for a 12-4 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Despite being outscored 5-1 in the third, Kirk made several spectacular saves that kept SU from ballooning its lead even more.

Hobart outscored Syracuse 3-1 in the final frame, but it was too little too late.

The Orange outshot the Statesmen 45-21, had a 34-24 advantage in ground balls, and committed seven fewer turnovers.

Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, April 23, when the Statesmen visit ECAC rival, No. 20 Loyola. The opening faceoff is scheduled for noon. The game will be televised by WMAR-TV in Baltimore and streamed live online by ESPN3.com.
