Hobart College Lacrosse Head Coach T.W. Johnson recently announced the appointment of Chris Scanlon '05 to serve as an assistant coach for the 2012 season. The former Statesman midfielder joins the staff following John Svec's departure to become the head coach at Siena.
“I couldn't be more excited to welcome Chris back to campus,” Johnson said. “I had the privilege of coaching Chris during his senior year and I'm looking forward to working with him now. He has a true appreciation and passion for the Colleges and for Statesmen lacrosse which I believe will be very clear to our alumni, parents, student-athletes and recruits.”
Scanlon returns to his alma mater after spending the past three years as a social studies teacher and lacrosse coach at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse. He was an assistant coach for the Brothers' boys' varsity team and the head coach of the junior varsity. This past spring, CBA was 11-6 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Section III Class C Tournament.
A two-time team captain, Scanlon played 50 career games at Hobart, recording 46 career goals and 14 assists for 60 points, and collected 69 ground balls. The North-South All-Star earned Hobart's Crook Family Award for superior value to the team and the Joseph N. Abraham Memorial Award for perseverance through injury as a senior. In 2004, Scanlon was selected All-Patriot League second team after logging 16 goals and four assists. A year earlier, he earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Scanlon graduated from Hobart with a bachelor's degree in history. In 2007, he earned a master's degree in education from St. Lawrence University. During his two years in the North Country, Scanlon also served as an assistant lacrosse coach at Clarkson University.
A third round draft pick of the MLL's Rochester Rattlers, Scanlon has spent five seasons in the MLL. He has also worked with the Central New York Roadhawks, an elite lacrosse club, and Students of the Game Lacrosse Camp.
A native of Painted Post, N.Y., Scanlon was inducted into the Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
Hobart returns eight starters from the 2011 squad and is tentatively scheduled to open the 2012 campaign on Feb. 18.
