Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 13 William Smith soccer team battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie with visiting Nazareth in a non-league match played tonight on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation.
It's the first time William Smith has ever played a soccer match on Boswell Field. The Herons finished the regular season with a 12-2-2 overall record. Nazareth is now 9-4-4 overall and will play its final regular season game against Skidmore on Saturday, Oct. 27.
William Smith held a 15-7 advantage in shots, with five coming in the second overtime. The Herons also finished with a 3-2 edge in corners. Junior goalie
Chelsea Dunay stopped five shots in all 110 minutes for William Smith. Abbie Carey finished with four saves for the Golden Flyers.
The best scoring chances for the Herons came in the second overtime period. With just over 4:30 left in the second overtime, sophomore
Brenna Kincaid fired a shot on goal that was just barely stopped by Nazareth's Sarah Cipperly, who was protecting what would have otherwise been an open net. Seconds after, Kincaid blasted another shot at the goal that was also turned away by Cipperly.
William Smith also had a chance to break the scoreless tie just 1:46 into the second overtime when first-year
Zoe Eth drilled a shot that went inches wide of the left post.
Nazareth's best scoring chances came in the second half. In the 64th minute, Christine Belding broke through for a one-on-one with the goalie, but Dunay rejected a point blank shot to keep the score tied at 0-0. With 4:37 left on the clock, Olivia Derleth intercepted a ball misplayed by a Heron defender and found herself positioned for a one-on-one with the keeper, however Dunay came sprinting out of the goal and dove on top of the ball before Derleth could even get a shot off.
William Smith has clinched the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the Liberty League Tournament, and will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 2:30 p.m. on Cozzens Field. The opponent is yet to be determined, as the seeds will not be finalized until RPI and Skidmore play on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
