Statesmen drop 2 matches in Day 1 of the Navy Round Robin

The Hobart College squash team dropped two matches on the first day of the 2012 Navy Round Robin. The Statesmen fell 9-0 to No. 13 Navy in its first match today, and then were edged 5-4 by No. 28 Johns Hopkins.

Hobart, who is ranked No. 25 in the College Squash Association Preseason poll, is now 1-2 overall. The Statesmen will take on No. 19 Georgetown and No. 16 George Washington tomorrow to wrap up the Navy Round Robin.

Against Johns Hopkins, senior Julian Snider picked up an 11-4, 12-10, 11-7 win at No. 4. First-year Peter Sammis registered an 11-4, 9-11,11-2, 12-10 triumph at No. 7. At No. 8, first-year Michael Woods topped his opponent, 11-6, 11-5, 12-10, and at No. 9 senior Charlie Merrill dropped his first match 10-12, but rallied to win the next three 11-8, 11-9, 11-5.

It all came down to a battle at the No. 2 spot. Javier Chalopin won the first game 11-6, but junior William Boyle picked up a victory in the second and third games, 12-10 and 11-5, respectively. Chalopin came back to win the next two games 11-8 and 14-12  to capture the 3-2 match victory and the overall 5-4 victory for his team.
