GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College swimming and diving team earned a pair of dual meet victories to open the 2012-13 season. The Herons topped Cazenovia 68-35 and Utica 62-41 in Bristol Pool.
William Smith won eight of the first 10 event on the way to victory. Senior
Casey Sherwin led the way with a pair of individual wins. She took the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.49, more than a second faster than the runner from Utica. Sherwin led a 1-2 Heron finish in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 1:06.11. First-year
Kate Mendez was second in 1:09.01.
William Smith recorded 1-2 sweeps in the 50 free and the 100 butterfly as well. Duffy took the 50 in 25.91 with
Samantha Burnett finishing second in 27.49. Senior
Heidi Gordon won the 100 fly in 1:04.35, 0.43 seconds ahead of first-year
Brooke Adams.
First-year
Sarah Litt had hand in two victories. She won the 200 individual medley by more than 13 seconds over the runner-up with a time of 2:25.0. Litt also teamed up with Adams and seniors
Katie Stebbins and
Amanda Woods to capture the 200 medley relay in 2:00.49, enjoying a 10-second margin over second place Utica.
First-year Morgon Onorato prevailed on the 1-meter diving board with a score of 161.3, 9.75 points better than the runner up from Cazenovia. Sophomore
Christine Rhoads posted the final Heron victory, with a time of 5:41.58 in the 500 free.
William Smith competed in the final three events with exhibition entries.
The Herons will be back in the pool at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, when they visit Ithaca.
