Rochester outlasts Hobart in Wendy's Classic Championship

Box Score Hobart College junior forward Richie Bonney scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the championship game of the 47th annual Wendy's College Classic, but the University of Rochester grabbed the title 73-64 on their home floor at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

A back-and-forth contest, the Statesmen and Yellowjackets traded the lead 13 times and forged six ties. Hobart (3-3) grabbed its final lead of the night, 52-51, on a jumper by sophomore guard Connor Rehbaum with 5:38 remaining. Nate Vernon answered with a traditional 3-point play for Rochester (8-0).

The Yellowjackets ran their lead out to eight, 64-56, with two minutes to go. Hobart managed to close that gap to just three, 67-64, on a layup by Bonney. The Statesmen were unable to get any closer though as Rochester made all six of its free throws in the final 24 seconds to secure the victory.

Senior guard Stefan Thompson netted 12 points for Hobart and Rehbaum added 10 points and seven rebounds. Bonney and Thompson were named to the All-Classic first team.

Classic MVP John DiBartolomeo scored a game-high 29 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out a game-high six assists. Vernon added 18 points and Tyler Sankes produced eight points and nine rebounds. Both Vernon and Sankes joined DiBartolomeo on the All-Classic first team.

Rochester shot 50 percent from the floor and made nearly twice as many free throws as Hobart attempted, going 21-of-25 at the line. The Statesmen shot just 38.7 percent from the floor and were 9-of-12 from the charity stripe.

Hobart will visit Rochester again on Saturday, Dec. 8. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
