Thompson nets 28, but #11 Rochester outlasts Hobart 86-80

Box Score Hobart College senior guard Stefan Thompson scored a team-high 28 points, one off his career-high, but for the second time in a week, 11th-ranked University of Rochester got 29 points from senior guard John DiBartolomeo post an 86-80 victory over the Statesmen at the Louis Alexander Palestra, in Rochester, N.Y.

Thompson was 9-of-15 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc, and handed out six assists. Junior forward Richie Bonney scored 21. Sophomore guard Connor Rehbaum matched his career-high with 13 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Junior guard Joe Gibbons added 12 points.

Last Saturday, DiBarolomeo had 29 points, eight rebounds, and six assists as the Yellowjackets defeated Hobart 73-64 in the championship of the Wendy's College Classic. Today, he had 29 points, 10 assists, and two steals.

Rob Reid added a season's high 19 points for Rochester. Tyler Seidman had 13 points. Nate Vernon scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Tyler Sankes finished with 10 points and three rebounds.

Rochester improved to 10-0 overall. The Yellowjackets have won 12 in a row dating back to last season and 16 of the last 17. It also extended Rochester's 28-game regular season homecourt winning streak. The last Yellowjacket home loss came on December 11, 2010 to Hobart (86-78).

Rochester sprinted out to a 9-0 lead. A a traditional 3-point play by Bonney got Hobart within seven, 32-24, with 6:19 left in the first half. In the next 90 seconds, Vernon drove for a layup, DiBartolomeo sank a 3-pointer, and Reid dropped in a layup from DiBartolomeo to stretch the lead to 38-24 with 4:38 left. Rochester led 46-32 at the half.

Early in the second half, DiBartolomeo scored seven points as part of a 10-0 run (Vernon hit a trey for the other 3 points) over 1:47 to give Rochester its largest lead, 60-42, with 14:33 left.

Hobart's Rezin Davis and Seidman traded 3-pointers before the Statesmen scored 10 straight – six from a pair of Thompson 3-pointers – to move within eight, 63-55, with 9:27 left. Rochester maintained its edge, although Hobart closed within five, 83-78, on a Davis 3-pointer at the 1:13 mark. DiBartolomeo, Seidman, and Sankes each made one of two from the line in the final minute.

Hobart (3-4) will close out the 2012 portion of its schedule at home on Sunday, Dec. 30. The Statesmen will host Hartwick at 3 p.m. in Bristol Gym.
