Box Score LEWISBURG, Pa.—Four unanswered goals to end the first half propelled Bucknell University past the Hobart College lacrosse team at Christy Mathewson Stadium this afternoon. The Bison got a school record tying eight goals from sophomore attackman Todd Heritage on their way to a 14-10 victory over the Statesmen.
Senior midfielder Nick Gantsoudes contributed a hat trick for Bucknell (2-3). Junior attackman Chase Bailey notched two goals and three assists while senior attackman Billy Eisenreich recorded a goal and three assists.
Hobart, which entered the game without four starting midfielders and its opening day goalie, all due to injuries, got a team-high six points, all assists, from sophomore attackman
Cam Stone. The Hobart Division I record for assists in a game is seven, shared by Jamie Kirk '08 and John Bogosian '03. First-year midfielder
Taylor Vanderbeek netted a team-high four goals. Sophomore long-stick midfielder
Peter Bolte and sophomore attackman
Alex Love each produced a pair of goals while senior midfielder
Chris Pedersen had a goal and an assist.
Vanderbeek and Pedersen scored back-to-back goals to stake the Statesmen (1-3) to an early lead, but Gantsoudes and Heritage countered late in the first quarter to tie the game. Hobart carried a 3-2 lead into the second quarter thanks to sophomore attackman
Jake McHenry's man-up strike with 18 seconds left in the frame.
Heritage scored twice to start the second quarter, giving the Bison their first lead of the game. Love finished off a Stone feed to tie the game at 4-all at the 10:35 mark. Heritage scored his fourth straight tally to give BU at 5-4 edge, but Love struck again at 7:20, this time assisted by junior midfielder
Jesse Mancuso, to even the match for the final time.
Fittingly, Heritage kickstarted Bucknell's decisive run, firing home a pass from Eisenreich. Eisenreich scored himself just 70 seconds later. Gantsoudes made it 8-5 at the 3:41 mark and Bailey closed out the first half scoring at the 2:02 mark.
Vanderbeek, assisted by Stone, opened the third quarter scoring to trim Hobart's deficit to 9-6, but the Statesmen got no closer. The two sides played the second half to a 5-5 draw.
Hobart outshot Bucknell 40-33, but junior goalie Kyle Feeney made 13 saves to earn the win. Sophomore
Peter Zonino made 11 stops for the Statesmen.
The Bison enjoyed a 37-30 edge in ground balls and committed fewer turnovers (14-17). Hobart enjoyed the edge at the faceoff X behind first-year
Gryphin Kelly's 15-of-28 performance. He also collected a game-high eight ground balls. The Statesmen were 2-of-4 with the extra man, while BU was 1-for-4.
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, March 17, when the Statesmen host Robert Morris on Boswell Field. The opening faceoff is slated for 1 p.m.
