Box Score Hobart College senior guard
Stefan Thompson produced a game-high 25 points and notched team-highs with eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals, but host Ithaca College eked out an 80-74 non-conference basketball win.
Thompson was 7-of-15 from the floor and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. He was joined in double figures by junior guard
Joe Gibbons and junior forward
Richie Bonney with 18 points and 16 points, respectively.
The Bombers (9-3) put four players in double digits, led by Andrei Oztemel's 22 points. Travis Warech chipped in a double-double on 21 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Frank Mitchell and Tom Sweeney tossed in 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
Hobart shot 49.1 percent from the floor while Ithaca converted 47.5 percent. The Bombers turned the game with their long range shooting, making 10-of-20 from behind the 3-point arc. Oztemel was 6-of-12 from deep.
Ithaca used a 13-2 run early in the contest to build the largest lead of the game for either side. Sweeney capped the surge with a traditional 3-point play, giving the Bombers a 22-9 lead with 13:09 left in the opening stanza. Oztemel dropped one in from beyond the arc for a 33-24 lead.
The Statesmen (7-5) responded with nine unanswered points to tie the score 3:28 before the break. Ithaca was able to retake the lead and went into halftime with a 43-41 lead.
In the first 19 minutes of the second half, neither team led by more than four points. Tied at 72 with 3:00 remaining, Hobart had the ball looking for the lead, but a shot clock violation gave possession back to the Bombers. Mitchell puts his team in the lead for good with a layup at 2:13.
The Statesmen misfired at the other end of the floor and Oztemel grabbed the rebound, setting up a Warech layup for a 76-72 lead with 1:22 remaining. On its next possession, Hobart got the ball inside, but Mitchell blocked a layup attempt and collected the board. The Bombers again got the ball to Warech, whose layup made it a 78-72 game.
Bonney scored with 17 seconds to go, but Oztemel got the two points back at the free throw line four second later and the Statesmen were unable to convert another field goal attempt.
Hobart returns to Liberty League play at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, when the Statesmen visit St. Lawrence.
