William Smith soccer to host Cabrini in NCAA tournament 1st round match

The William Smith College soccer team will host the first and second rounds of the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship this weekend, Nov. 16-17. The No. 3 Herons will take on Cabrini on Cozzens Field on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m.

The other first round game between SUNY Oneonta and Farmingdale State will be played at 1:30 p.m. Saturday's winners will meet on Sunday at 1 p.m., for a spot in the third round.

Tickets are $6 for general admission, $3 for students, senior citizens and military personnel, and $2 for children ages 3-12.

The Herons (17-1-0) earned the Liberty League's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA tournament after winning their seventh straight conference championship. William Smith defeated RIT 1-0 in the championship match. The victory was the Herons' 17th in a row and their 10th straight shutout.  William Smith will be making its 24th appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Junior All-Liberty League honoree Madeline Buckley leads the Herons with 21 points and eight goals. First-year Kara Shue, the 2013 Liberty League Rookie of the Year and first team selection, has produced a team-high nine assists and ranks second on the team with 19 points. The conference Co-Defensive Performer of the Year and first team honoree, Chelsea Dunay is sporting a 17-1-0 record in goal. She has recorded a 0.34 goals against average and a .893 save percentage.

Cabrini won its third consecutive CSAC championship to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Cavaliers are 12-3-5 overall and are riding a 12-match unbeaten streak. Melissa Scanzan leads the team with 22 points on eight goals and six assists. Devon Miller has notched a team-high nine goals. Marissa Jenkins has played the majority of minutes in goal. She has an 11-2-4 record this season and is sporting a 0.74 goals against average and a .745 save percentage.

The William Smith vs. Cabrini game will also be broadcast live on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva). Fans can also follow the action online with live stats and streaming video at NCAA.com.
