Statesmen open season at Navy Round Robin

The Hobart College squash team opened the season playing two matches today in the 2013 Navy Veterans Weekend Round Robin. The Statesmen fell 6-3 to Johns Hopkins and lost 9-0 to host Navy.

Against the Blue Jays, Hobart started out with a 11-8, 11-4, 12-10 win by first-year Art Martella at No. 6. Johns Hopkins earned wins at Nos. 9 and 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Sophomore Michael Woods rallied for a 9-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-7 victory at No. 5 to tie things up at 2-2. The Blue Jays posted a win at No. 8 to go up 3-2, but senior William Boyle notched an 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 triumph at No. 2 to knot the match at 3-3. The Blue Jays clinched the overall victory with wins at Nos. 4,7, and 1.

Against Navy, first-year Scott Marcus put up a strong fight at No. 8, but fell 16-14, 11-7, 12-10.

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Nov. 17, when they take on Georgetown at 9:30 a.m. and George Washington at noon in the second day of Navy's round robin.
