The William Smith College tennis team will start the spring portion of its schedule this weekend, when the Herons host Oneonta for a match on the indoor courts in Bristol Field House on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m.
“Considering that we haven't played since October, and everyone is getting tired of playing their teammates, I think we will be more than ready to play this weekend. I think we have some terrific depth in singles, but I'm very curious to see how we do as a team in doubles, as last year's team and its departed seniors really set the bar high,” said Head Coach
Chip Fishback.
William Smith began the fall with its annual Mary Hosking Invitational. Sophomore
Teru Greene won the B Flight singles and first-year
Charlotte Federowicz earned the C Flight Singles title. Senior
Kiara Ocasio teamed with Greene to win the A Flight Doubles. The Herons then hosted the ITA Northeast Regional Championships. Ocasio and Greene advanced to the championship doubles final, becoming the first ever Herons to do so under the guidance of Fishback.
In William Smith's first dual match of the 2012-13 season, the Herons cruised to a 9-0 win over St. John Fisher back on Sept. 30. William Smith then traveled Ithaca, N.Y., to compete in the New York State Championships. Ocasio won the fifth singles bracket. Junior
Casey Nicoletti advanced to the championship match in the fourth singles bracket and she paired with junior
Kate O'Connor to make it as far as the championship match in third doubles.
Federowicz and Nicoletti lead the team with six singles wins each. Greene and Ocasio lead the Herons in doubles, posting a 10-2 record in the fall.
After taking on the Red Dragons on Saturday, William Smith will travel to Orlando, Fla., over spring break, where they will play matches against Grinnell, Hollins and Calvin.
