The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team will vie for a spot in the Coed Dinghy National Championship this weekend, as it competes in the 2013 Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Coed Dinghy National Semifinals in Hampton, Va. Hampton University and Old Dominion University are co-hosting the event at the Hampton Yacht Club.
The regatta is divided into two fleets, Eastern and Western, each comprised of 18 schools from across the country. The top nine schools in each fleet will qualify for the Gill/ICSA Coed National Championship in St. Petersburg, Fla.
HWS will take part in the Western fleet along with Georgetown University, St. Mary's College of Maryland, Fordham University, University of Wisconsin, Northwestern University, Notre Dame University, Boston College, Tufts University, Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Western Washington University, University of Hawaii, College of Charleston, University of Florida, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M University, and Tulane University.
Eighteen races are scheduled in A and B divisions of each semifinal fleet. The Colleges will look to seniors
John Norfleet,
Bridget Nannig and
Kathryn Moloney to compete in the A Division and junior
Louis Padnos, senior
Catherine Pelo, junior
Jane Rew and first-year
William Godfrey in the B Division. First-year
Stewart Draheim will also travel as an alternate skipper.
HWS has competed in the Coed Dinghy National Championship 13 times since 1996. The Colleges have advanced to the national championship event in each of the past 10 years.
