Stone hits century mark in loss at Air Force

Box Score Junior attackman Cam Stone became the 10th Hobart College lacrosse player to record 100 career points at the Division I level with a goal and two assists, but the Air Force Academy topped the Statesmen 16-12 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Hobart ends the season with a 6-8 record, 2-5 in the ECAC. The Falcons finish the year 7-7 with a 2-5 league mark.

Stone set up Hobart's second goal of the day for his 100th career point. It was also his 61st career assist, tying Chris Pedersen '12 for fourth place of the Statesmen DI list. Early in the second half, Stone posted his second assist to pass Pedersen. It raise his season total to 29 matching his 2012 total, which ranks second on Hobart's DI season list behind Jamie Kirk's 2007 record of 38.

First-year midfielder Frank Brown led the Statesmen with three goals and an assist. Junior attackman Jake McHenry added a hat trick and first-year Matt Opsahl chipped in a season-high three points on two goals and an assist.

Hobart's faceoff specialists sophomore Gryphin Kelly and first-year Charles Sipe performed well. Kelly was 10-of-18 with a team-high four ground balls. Sipe went 8-of-14 with four ground balls. Senior long-stick midfielder Ethan O'Connor also grabbed four GBs for the Statesmen.

Air Force got a stellar performance from senior goalie Austin Fox, who made 14 saves. Sophomore attackman Keith Dreyer recorded a game-high five points, all assists. Junior midfielder Erik Smith scored four goals and junior attackman Mike Crampton registered three goals and an assist. Sophomore attackman Ryland De Pol also had a hat trick.

The defenses controlled the contest early, as neither team scored in the first 10 minutes. The Falcons finally broke through, scoring three times before the first frame was through, including back-to-back tallies by Smith and Crampton to start the run.

Hobart got on the board with consecutive goals to start the second quarter. Sophomore midfielder Taylor Vanderbeek scored unassisted at the 13:11 mark and McHenry fired home Stone's assist less than a minute later. Air Force got one back, but McHenry scored an extra-man goal at 11:36 to make it a 4-3 game.

The Falcons seized control of the contest with four straight goals to end the half, including two in the final minute. Air Force carried its momentum into the second half scoring four of the first five goals of the third quarter. Smith's second tally of the day, at the 7:17 mark, gave the home team a 12-4 lead.

The Statesmen offense got back on track thanks to a couple of penalties against the Falcons. Stone scored an extra-man goal, set up by Opsahl, at the 6:39 mark. Air Force countered 30 second later, but Brown got on the board via an extra-man opportunity with 5:30 left in the third. About a minute and a half later, Opsahl scored an even-strength goal to make it a 13-7 game.

Smith scored with the man-advantage late in the frame to give the Falcons a 14-7 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Senior midfielder Jake Silberlicht recorded his ninth goal of the year 61 seconds into the final frame and Opsahl followed just over a minute later with another Hobart extra-man goal. Air Force began the week 11th in the nation in man-down defense, but the Statesmen were 4-of-8 in extra-man situations on the day.

The Falcons made it 15-9 with a goal at the 12:38 mark. Hobart responded with three unanswered goals in under two minutes to make things interesting. Vanderbeek scored the first unassisted. The junior attackman assisted on goals by Brown and McHenry just 28 seconds apart to make it a three-goal game with 9:39 remaining.

De Pol stopped the run, converting a pass from Dreyer, with 7:29 remaining. From there Fox recorded his final two saves of the day to close out his career with a win.

Hobart held a slim 38-37 edge in shots, an 18-14 advantage in faceoffs, and collected five more ground balls than the Falcons (33-28). The Statesmen committed three more turnovers than their hosts (16-13) and struggled to clear the ball, converting just 14-of-19.

Love failed to score a goal for just the second time this season, but did post a pair of assists, finishing the season with 55 points (45g,10a), one off of Mark Williamson's Hobart Division I season record. Love also raised his career point total to 119 (98g,19a), moving past Pedersen into sixth place on Hobart's Division I list.

Stone finished the year with 49 points (20g,29a), tied for fifth on Hobart's DI season list.

Senior defensemen Sean Regan and Reid Rosello each posted a caused turnover in the game. Regan finished his career as the Statesmen career record holder with 60. Rosello is second in career caused turnovers with 48 following his Hobart season record 25 this season. Regan is second on the season list with 22 this year. As a team, Hobart broke the program record for caused turnovers in a season with 109.
