Herons earn a spot in the Liberty League tournament semifinals

The William Smith tennis team earned a spot in the Liberty League Tournament semifinals today with a 5-2 win over No. 5 seed RPI in the quarterfinals hosted by RIT in Henrietta, N.Y. The Herons are the No. 4 seed in the tournament and improved to 12-6 overall.

William Smith will face top-seeded and nationally-ranked No. 19 Skidmore in its semifinal match tomorrow at RIT at 10 a.m. The Thoroughbreds defeated Bard in their quarterfinal match.

RPI (13-5) came out of doubles play up 2-1. Senior Hallsey Leighton and junior Casey Nicoletti earned the Herons' lone doubles win with an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 spot.

William Smith took control in singles play notching wins at Nos. 1, 4,5, and 6 to secure the overall victory. Tournament matches are played until decision, so matches at Nos. 2 and 3 remained unfinished. Sophomore Teru Greene posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at the top spot. Sophomore 13-Haley Wolf earned a 6-2,6-4 win at No. 4. First-year Sydney Arsenault battled for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win at the No. 5 spot, and classmate Charlotte Federowicz cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6.

It's the fourth year in a row Herons and the Thoroughbreds will meet in the Liberty League Tournament semifinals.
