Heron first-years provide top finishes at RIT

HENRIETTA, N.Y.—The William Smith College swimming and diving team got a pair of wins from the Class of 2017 in a dual meet at the Rochester Institute of Technology this afternoon. The host Tigers won the meet by a score of 149-80.

First-year Stefani Schmitz gave the Herons their first win of the meet, capturing the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:19.25 almost five seconds ahead of the runner-up. She also placed second in the 200 breaststroke and fourth in the 200 individual medley relay.

Classmate Caroline Conboy earned William Smith second victory, besting Schmitz in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:32.1. Conboy finished third in the 200 freestyle and swam with the second place 200 medley relay team that also included first-year Kelsey Bohl, junior Samantha Burnett, and senior Sally Storch. The 200 medley relay team touched the wall in 1:55.95, just 0.02 seconds behind the Tigers winning team.

William Smith's 200 free relay also earned first place points. Senior Mimi Mahoney, first-year Samantha Bowers, junior Christine Rhoads, and sophomore Emily Linde stopped the clock in 1:54.35.

The Herons (6-3) got additional second place points from Rhoads in the 200 IM (2:21.85) and sophomore Brooke Adams in the 200 butterfly (2:26.54).

William Smith will compete in its final home meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 25, when the Herons host Cazenovia and Wells colleges at 1 p.m. in Bristol Pool.
