The William Smith field hockey team earned a 5-2 non-conference victory over Ithaca this evening. Three different players scored goals for the Herons as they picked up their seventh win of the season.
Â
Sophomore
Katie Meyer put William Smith (7-3) on the board in the eighth minute. First-year
Hannah Wood fired a pass to Meyer that sent her in on goal alone. All Meyer had to do was put the ball past the goalie and she buried it for her fifth goal of the year.
Â
In the 29th minute,
Maura Moran collected a rebound and shot the ball past the Bombers goalie to give the Herons a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Â
Meyer added her second goal of the contest in the second half. On a scramble in front of the net, she tipped a bouncing ball into back of the net. Five minutes later, Wood collected her first goal of the game. She picked up her own rebound on the right side of the net and fired it into the cage.
Â
A little less than two minutes later, Cassie Schuttrumpf scored Ithaca's (4-5) first goal. Amanda Schell sent a pass in front of the net where Schuttrumpf was waiting to tip home the centering pass. Two and a half minutes later, Colleen Keegan-Twombly made things interesting finishing her own scoring opportunity to bring the Bombers within two.
Â
Wood added an insurance goal for the Herons just past the 65 minute mark. Moran inserted a penalty corner to Wood at the top of the circle who fired the shot past the goalie. The goal was her 13th of the season. Wood finished the night with a team-high five points.
Â
Senior
Catherine Hare got the start and played 59 minutes in net making 2 saves. Sophomore
