#8 Herons clinch 8th straight league regular season title with win at RPI

TROY, N.Y.—The eighth-ranked William Smith College soccer team clinched at least a share of its eighth consecutive Liberty League regular season championship with a 3-1 victory at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute this afternoon. The Herons scored less than three minutes into the match and never trailed on the way to their 10th straight win.

The defending national champions improved to 11-2-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the league, while the Engineers fell to 9-5-1, 4-2-0.

Senior Krista Longo put the visitors in front when she finished a cross at the top of the 6-yard box in the third minute. The goal, which was assisted by sophomore Kara Shue, was the sixth of the season for Longo. William Smith doubled its lead in the 30th minute when sophomore MacKenzie Smith scored off a rebound of a Brenna Kincaid shot. Smith collected a ball that was bouncing free inside the box and scored her first of the year.

Heron sophomore Emma Diehl made it a 3-0 score in the 55th minute when she scored on a penalty kick after a teammate was taken down in the box.

Senior Taylor Korytko broke up the shutout when she converted a free kick from just outside the box in the 66th minute, but the Engineers got no closer despite an aggressive effort throughout the second half.

First-year goalkeeper Nicole McGlinchy improved to 10-1-0 with two saves. First-year Tori Riopelle played the first half for RPI and sophomore Alex Scholz the second. Scholz made one save.

William Smith travels to Clarkson University (6-8-1, 2-3-1) for a league match at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. A win or a tie for the Herons would clinch the league's regular season title outright.
