Hannah Wood scored three goals, including the game-winner, as the Heron field hockey team defeated St. John Fisher 4-3 in overtime this afternoon.
The Cardinals (10-5) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute when Caitlin Allen picked up a rebound in front of the cage and fired a shot into the back of the net.
The Herons (10-5) tied the game just over three minutes later when Wood notched her first goal of the game. She made a defender miss and buried the shot for her 17th goal of the season. Sophomore
Alessandra Patrizio made it 2-1 in the 16th minute. She worked herself into position at the top of the circle and lofted a shot into the upper corner of the goal.
Wood tallied her second goal of the game in the second half. Sophomore
Lauren Stevenson sent a pass in front of the goal to Wood who was able to collect the ball and put it between the goalie's legs to put William Smith up 3-1.
St. John Fisher's Emily Markarian responded to the two goal deficit by scoring the game's next two goals. In the 58th minute, she scooped up a rebound and shot the ball into the open cage. In the 64th minute, Stacie Skidmore connected with Markarian to even the game at three.
Through the end of regulation, the Herons held a 27-20 advantage in shots and a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Six minutes into the first extra period, first-year
Alexandra Frary and Wood broke into the Cardinals' side of the field on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Frary sent a leading pass to Wood whose shot beat the keeper for her 19th goal of the season.
William Smith added seven shots in the overtime period to bring their total on the afternoon to 34. The Herons ended up outshooting their opponents 34-20.
Senior
Catherine Hare got the start in goal for William Smith playing the entire game while making seven saves. Danielle Famolaro played the entire game between the pipes for St. John Fisher making 20 saves.
The Herons return to action Saturday when they travel to take on 20th ranked Cortland in a non-conference contest.
