Four second half goals lift #20 Cortland past Herons

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The William Smith College Field Hockey team dropped a non-conference contest to 20th-ranked Cortland this afternoon. The Red Dragons used four second half goals to pull away from the Herons.

William Smith (10-6) scored the game's first goal in the 33rd minute when Hannah Wood fired her 20th goal of the season into the back of the cage. After a penalty corner, first-year Alexandra Frary sent a short pass to Wood at the top of the circle. Wood, who set Heron rookie goals and points records in Wednesday's win against St. John Fisher, now ranks sixth on the single-season goals list and eighth on the points list.

Cortland (13-2) answered back 28 seconds later when Shelby Underwood buried a shot from right in front of the cage to tie the game at one. The Herons outshot the Red Dragons 5-3 in the first half and the two teams entered the intermission tied.

Cortland came out of the break netting the game's next four goals. Just past the 44 minute mark, Alexa Sanzone collected a scramble in front of the goal to put the Red Dragons up for good. Three minutes later, Victoria Dean scored her first goal of the game on a cross cage pass from Sanzone. In the 54th minute, Dean notched a second goal off of a deflection in front. She completed the natural hat trick in the 57th minute. Dean picked up a rebound and put the ball in the back of the net.

Senior Catherine Hare started in net for William Smith and made six saves. After the third Cortland goal, Amy Feda came into the game in relief of Hare and made a save in 10:47 of action. Hare came back into the game for the final 14 minutes. Mairead Hourihan started in goal for the Red Dragons and made two stops on the afternoon.

The Red Dragons outshot William Smith 16-7; however, William Smith held a slight 5-4 edge in penalty corners.

William Smith will close out the regular season Saturday, Nov. 1 when 18th-ranked Messiah comes to Geneva, New York for a non-conference match.
