Messiah runs away from Herons

GENEVA, N.Y. - The William Smith College field hockey team dropped its regular season finale 3-1 to Messiah this afternoon.
 
Junior Erin Miller put the Herons (10-7) up 1-0 in the third minute. Miller collected a rebound on the left side of the cage and fired her first goal of the season into the back of the cage.
 
The Falcons (12-6) tied the game at one in the 20th minute. Becky Ely was awarded a penalty stroke and buried her opportunity in the right corner of the cage. Ten minutes later, Taylor Holt redirected a Nicole Wilkerson shot into the back of the net to put Messiah up 2-1.
 
The Falcons wasted little time in the second half collecting the games fourth goal. After a scramble in front of the cage, Moriah Pfautz sent a shot into the back of the net to give Messiah a 3-1 lead in the 38th minute.
 
Senior Catherine Hare started in net for William Smith and made seven saves. Carly Day started in net for the Falcons making four saves on the afternoon.
 
Messiah outshot the Herons 22-7 and outgained William Smith 9-4 in penalty corners.
 
The Herons return to action Wednesday, Nov. 5, when they take on Rochester in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament. The Yellowjackets used two second half goals to edge William Smith 3-2 when the teams met on Oct. 17 at McCooey Field.
