GENEVA. N.Y.—The No. 8 William Smith College soccer team played through 104:40 to a 0-0 tie with No. 19 Nazareth before the non-league game was called due to darkness on Cozzens Field. The Herons are now 12-2-1 overall and extend their unbeaten streak to 12 matches.
The Golden Flyers are 12-3-2 this season. It's the 10th shutout of the year for William Smith. First-year goalie
Nicole McGlinchy made three saves, including two in the first overtime period to secure her fourth shutout. Allison Dobles played all 104:40 for Nazareth and stopped 11 shots, including four in overtime.
William Smith came out strong in the first half, outshooting the Golden Flyers 7-1. In the 23rd minute, senior
Krista Longo broke through for a scoring chance. She beat her two defenders for a one-on-one-with the keeper, but Dobles sprawled out to get just a piece of the ball which rolled behind her, but bounced off the right post.
In the second half, it was senior
MaryClaire Pelletier with the just miss for William Smith. In the 54th minute, her shot from about 16 yards out banged off the crossbar. Courtney Malia had a scoring chance for Nazareth in the 58th minute. She tried to blast a shot on goal from the top of the box, but Heron senior defender
Brenna Kincaid bolted out to stifle her attempt. In the 60th minute, sophomore
Kara Shue fired a shot on goal that got past the Golden Flyer keeper, but one of the defenders was able to clear it away before it crossed the goal line.
The first overtime period was action packed with both goalies making key saves to keep the game scoreless. Longo had another opportunity to score in the 91st minute. Shue pushed a pass from the left side to Longo out in front. Longo was all alone for a one-on-one with the keeper, but Dobles came running out and dove on the ball just as Longo got her shot off.
In the 96th minute, Christine Belding came inches away from breaking the tie for Nazareth. She lifted a shot on goal, and McGlinchy jumped and just pushed it away, off the cross bar with her fingers to deny the chance. Under a minute later, senior
Madeline Buckley fired a shot on goal that Dobles laid out to stop. Shue put a shot on goal in the 103rd minute, but Dobles came up with the save once again. The game was stopped 4:40 into the second overtime period due to darkness.
The Herons finished with a 25-7 advantage in shots and a 9-4 lead in corners.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 1, when it hosts RIT for its final regular season game. The Liberty League match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
