ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The fourth seeded William Smith College field hockey team knocked off top seeded Rochester 3-2 in a Liberty League semifinal game this afternoon.

Hannah Wood scored 95 seconds apart late in the second half to lead the Herons past the Yellowjackets.

Wood scored the game's first goal in the 26th minute. She collected her own rebound ten yards in front of the cage and buried the shot for her 21st goal of the season. William Smith (11-7) carried the 1-0 lead into halftime limiting Rochester to seven shots.

In the 55th minute, the Yellowjackets (15-5) tied the game at one. Michelle Relin took the ball up the right wing and fired a shot into the back of the net.

The Herons regained a one goal lead when sophomore
Alessandra Patrizio potted her fifth goal of the season. Patrizio and Wood broke in on the Rochester goalie. Â When the goalie came off her line to challenge Wood, Patrizio was able to tap the ball into the back of the net. A minute and a half later, Wood picked up her second goal of the game and 22nd goal of season when she flicked the ball past the goalie while falling to the turf. With 22 goals on the season, Wood is now tied for third most goals in William Smith single-season history. Her 49 points have moved her into a tie for sixth place on the single-season points list. Â

Rochester would not go quietly however. Megan Keil made it a 3-2 game off of a penalty corner. Tiffany White inserted the ball to the top of the circle where Belle Hoagland stopped the ball for Keil to send a shot into the back of the net.

The Herons outshot the Yellowjackets 22-12 including 12-5 in the second half. Rochester held a slight advantage in penalty corners 8-7.

Catherine Hare started in goal for the Herons making five saves in the contest. Tara Lamberti started in net for the Yellowjackets making 12 saves.

With a win, William Smith advances to the conference championship game on Saturday where they will face 12th-ranked Skidmore (16-3). The Herons will travel to Saratoga Springs, New York in a rematch of last season's championship game that the Thoroughbreds won 4-3. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
