Game Recap: William Smith Ice Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

William Smith edged by Neumann 2-1

The William Smith College ice hockey team dropped an ECAC West contest to Neumann, 2-1, this afternoon.

The Knights (1-7-1) opened the scoring at the 13:36 mark of the first period. Megan Russelo collected a pass in front of the goal and fired a shot that deflected off of the William Smith goalie and trickled over the goal line. Grace Killenbach and Kelly Fox were credited with the assists.

The Herons (1-6-1) leveled the game at one in the second period. Johanna Slicklen won a face-off in the attacking zone back to Megan Wilmot. Wilmot sent a pass to Kiley Fewster who fed a pass to Slicklen who was waiting in front of the goal and buried the shot in the back of the net.

Russelo notched the game-winner for Neumann at the 16:35 mark of the second period.  She fired a shot from the left side of the cage that beat the goalie. Donna Williams set up the goal with a feed to Russelo out of the neutral zone.

Maggie Salmon started in goal for William Smith and made 58 saves. Chelsea Polidoro started between the pipes for the Knights and stopped 29 of the 30 shots she faced.

Neumann doubled up the Herons' shot total 60-30. Both teams were unsuccessful with the extra skater going 0-3 on the power play.

William Smith returns to action in a fitting Thanksgiving week match-up when they face-off against the New England College Pilgrims on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Face-off in Henniker, New Hampshire is scheduled for 1 p.m.
