William Smith swims past Alfred, Mansfield

ALFRED, N.Y. – The William Smith swimming and diving team picked up a pair of victories this afternoon defeating Alfred 132-100 and Division II Mansfield 168-52.

While the Herons did not place first in three of the first four events, they used a total team effort to defeat the Saxons and the Mountaineers. William Smith placed two swimmers in the top three in each of the meet's first seven events.

Sophomore Caroline Conboy recorded three individual wins for the Herons. Additionally, sophomore Kelsey Bohl had a hand in two victories for William Smith.

The Herons (3-1) started the meet off fast winning the 200-yard medley relay by more than two seconds over Mansfield. The William Smith relay team of Bohl, first-year Kate Moreau, senior Samantha Burnett, and first-year Katie Storch turned in a time of 1:59.03.

Conboy notched victories in the 200-yard individual medley, the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. In the individual medley, she turned in a time of 2:17.28, three seconds faster than the next closest swimmer.  Her freestyle time of 57.33 was almost a second faster than Amanda Ernst of Mansfield while her breaststroke time of 1:07.46 left the field in the dust winning by nearly seven seconds, breaking an Alfred pool record.

Bohl's second victory came in the 100 yard butterfly where she out touched teammate Burnett by seven-tenths of a second. Junior Brooke Adams placed third in the event for a 1-2-3 finish by the Herons. Bohl added a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.

Diver Kate Mendez also scored a victory for the Herons winning the diving competition by 20 points.

William Smith returns to the pool next Saturday when they host SUNY Cobleskill and Cazenovia at Bristol Pool.  The tri-meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
