ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The last time Hobart and Brockport squared off in the Wendy's College Classic, the Statesmen eked out a 71-70 on a buzzer beater in 2011. Today's meeting was just as dramatic, but this time the Golden Eagles celebrated a down to the wire win, outlasting Hobart 80-78 in overtime at Rochester's Palestra.
Â
The Statesmen (2-2) put five players in double figures, led by senior
Connor Rehbaum's 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Classmate
Andrew Hoy added 15 points. Both Rehbaum and Hoy were 4-for-6 from behind the 3-point arc. Sophomore
Pete Drescher chipped in 14 points and a team-high five assists. Senior
Trey Blanding and sophomore
Thomas Campion both finished the game with 10 points.
Â
Hobart shot 46.4 percent from the floor, including 11 3-pointers, but struggled at the free throw line (55.6%).
Â
For Brockport (2-4), Patrick Modzelewski produced game-highs of 30 points and 11 rebounds. Clifton Lyerly registered 22 points and a game-high six assists. The Golden Eagles shot 43.5 percent from the floor with eight 3-pointers and shot 75 percent at the free throw line.
Â
In the final minute of regulation, Hoy made 1-of-2 at the line to give the Statesmen a 71-68 lead with 54 seconds left in regulation. Brockport misfired on a triple try and Hobart corralled the rebound, but the Eagles forced a turnover and used a traditional 3-point play by Lyerly with 28 seconds to go to tie the game. Hobart took the final shot of regulation, but it was off the mark and the team's headed to overtime.
Â
The Statesmen took the lead with the first bucket of the extra session, but Modzelewski countered with a 3-pointer and Brockport never trailed again. Hobart tied the game twice in the waning minutes, the last time on a pair of free throws by Blanding with 15 ticks left, but Lyerly got to the basket for a layup with three seconds to go to complete the night's scoring. The Statesmen got off a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but Levi Pace blocked the shot to preserve the victory.
Â
The first half was a back-and-forth affair until the Golden Eagles ended the half on an 11-1 run to carry a 43-34 lead into halftime.
Â
Brockport scored the first six points of the second half to stretch its lead to 49-34. Hobart climbed out of the 15-point hole in part by canning five 3-pointers, including three from Hoy.
Â
The Statesmen will wrap up the 49th annual Wendy's College Classic, taking on RIT in the seventh place game on Saturday, Dec. 6. Tipoff at Geneseo's Kuhl Gymnasium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
