#15 Bryant rides fast start to 15-8 victory over Hobart

Box Score SMITHFIELD, R.I.—Fifteenth-ranked Bryant University used a fast start to hand Hobart College its first loss in the Northeast Conference men's lacrosse standings this afternoon. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-1 lead on its way to a 15-8 victory at the Bryant Turf Complex.
 
Junior midfielder Zach Reed recorded a career-high four points (3g,1a) to pace the Statesmen. Senior attackman Cam Stone and sophomore attackman Matt Opsahl both contributed a goal and an assist. Senior defenseman Connor Eustace had a team-high five ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers. Senior goalie Peter Zonino made 11 saves.
 
For the Bulldogs, Dan Sipperly scored a game-high four goals. Tucker James logged a game-high five points (3g,2a). Colin Dunster (3g,1a), Shane Morrell (2g,2a), and Alex Zomerfeld (1g,3a) each recorded four points. Faceoff specialist Kevin Massa dominated the X, winning 22-of-27 while picking up a game-high 17 ground balls. Goalie Gunnar Waldt made nine saves.
 
Bryant (6-2, 1-0) doubled up Hobart in ground balls (48-24) and enjoyed a 44-31 edge in shots. The Statesmen committed just 11 turnovers to the Bulldogs 18. Hobart went 3-for-4 with the extra man while Bryant was 2-for-4.
 
The Bulldogs came out firing, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Reed got the Statesmen on the board with a man-up goal assisted by Opsahl at the 8:28 mark. Just over two minutes later, Bryant got the goal back and then added three scores in the final two minutes of the opening frame to carry a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.
 
The home team kept rolling with the first two goals of the second quarter, but Hobart rattled off three straight, unassisted goals to make things interesting. Reed started the run at 11:30 followed by junior midfielder Taylor Vanderbeek at 3:39 and sophomore midfielder Cooper Stefaniak at 2:27. The Bulldogs went into halftime with a 10-4 lead following Sipperly's goal with 32 ticks left.
 
The Statesmen (2-6, 1-1) scored three of the first four goals of the second half to make it a four-goal game before the third quarter was five minutes old. Reed completed his first career hat trick 92 seconds in, but James scored on the extra man just over a minute later. Reed set up Opsahl at 11:19 and senior attackman Jake McHenry scored a man-up goal off a feed from Stone at 10:31 to make it an 11-7 game.
 
The momentum swung back in Bryant's favor as the Bulldogs scored three of the final four goals of the third quarter to restore their six-goal edge. Stone scored an extra-man goal to account for Hobart's final tally.
 
Sipperly scored the only goal of the fourth quarter.
 
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, March 29, when they visit Mount St. Mary's. The Northeast Conference showdown is scheduled to begin at noon.
