ResultsSARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The William Smith College rowing team won all four events in the 2014 Liberty League Women's Rowing Championships, securing its fourth consecutive and seventh overall conference title.
"We're very proud to be this year's Liberty League Champions," Head Coach
Sandra Chu said. "While the event is decided on the performance of the varsity eight, our goal as a program was to approach each race as though the title depended on every boat winning. The team responded well to this challenge. They pressed hard even when it would have been easier to back off."
The Heron varsity eight of
Emily Davidowitz,
Katie Paige,
Sinead Reilly,
Lauren Blake-Whitney,
Caroline DeWeirdt,
Aly Clark,
Emma Dow,
Alyssa Trebilcock, and
Libby Hughes covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:54.05 for an open-water victory over the field. Second place was too close to call. RIT was originally declared the runner-up, one tenth of a second ahead of No. 11 Rochester, but, after a video review, both crews were given the same time, more than 13 seconds behind the Herons. Union, St. Lawrence, and St. John Fisher rounded out the field.
Paige and Blake-Whitney became the first student-athletes in the conference to win the varsity eight championship in each of their four seasons.
William Smith's second varsity eight also enjoyed an open-water win, stopping the clock at 7:18.0. The Tigers again placed second with the Yellowjackets and Dutchwomen earning third and fourth, respectively. The Heron 2V8 was powered by
Susan Tuvell,
Carissa Boire,
Catherine Wolf-Rodda,
Eliza Orrick,
Emma Tiedemann,
Morgan Atanasio,
Laurie VanBenschoten,
Alex Belden, and
Morgan Burgess.
In the novice eight,
Hannah Glenshaw,
Karoline Loretan,
Acadia Moeyersoms,
Hannah Novak,
Sammie Kearney,
Margaret Cameron,
Nora Burd,
Nina Prescott, and
Samantha Fresh won the closest race of the championship by 2.7 seconds over St. Lawrence. The Herons turned in a time of 7:29.07.
William Smith earned its fourth set of gold medals in the varsity four.
Katie Lehmann,
Grace Hutton,
Emily Andersen,
Kristen Brayden, and
Megan Miskovsky won the first medals of the day, logging a time of 8:30.07 with an impressive 23.81-second margin of victory.
"I think today's victories were an example of the team's character," Chu said. "They have a true will to win, but more importantly, they do the work, possess the skills, and are self-critical enough to orchestrate those wins. Our coaching staff is very privileged to work with this caliber of team. We have started off our postseason in the best way possible and look forward to continuing in the same vein."
The Herons will be back on the water on May 3-4 when they compete in the New York State Championships in Whitney Point.
