#23 Herons defeat Fredonia 4-0 in home opener

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.--William Smith College junior Zoe Eth scored two goals as the No. 23 Heron soccer team defeated Fredonia 4-0 this afternoon in a non-league game played on Cozzens Field. With the win in its home opener, William Smith improves to 4-2-0 overall.

The Blue Devils fall to 2-4-0 this season. Sophomore Kara Shue added a goal and an assist for the Herons. First-year Nicole McGlinchy played the opening 61:33 in goal and stopped the only shot she faced. Junior Jackie Doyle came in for the final 28:27 and also made one stop. It's the Herons' second straight shutout and their third this season.

William Smith controlled the momentum of the match from the start. At 31:07, Shue broke through, scoring on what appeared to have been intended as a cross. Her shot came from the deep left corner and soared into the far right corner of the goal to make it 1-0. It was her first tally this season. Just 6:29 later, Eth logged her first goal of the year to make it 2-0. William Smith earned a corner and it was sent into the box by sophomore Emma Diehl. The attempt was initially cleared out by Fredonia, but Diehl was there to halt the clear and send the ball back into the box from the top right corner. She found Eth who headed it home from right out in front.

The Herons added to their lead scoring twice in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Senior Madeline Buckley worked hard to keep the ball down in the Herons' offensive end. She pushed a pass into the box to Shue who stopped it and kicked a short pass to senior Krista Longo, who blasted a shot into the back of the net. It was Longo's second goal this season and came in the 56th minute. At the 57 minute mark, Eth struck again. This time her goal came off a pass from Buckley. Eth's shot banged off the bottom side of the crossbar and bounced down over the goal line.

Fredonia had chances to score late in the game, earning back-to-back corners with just over 17 minutes left and another corner with just over seven minutes remaining, but each attempt was quickly cleared out by the Heron defense. Kelly Stieve almost broke through for the Blue Devils with 1:32 remaining, sending a free kick from just outside of the box on goal, but Doyle leapt to make the save and preserve the shutout.

William Smith finished with a 26-4 advantage in shots and a 12-3 lead in corners. Maggie Horan played the opening 45 minutes in goal for the Blue Devils and made five saves. Morgan Marshall came in for the second half and also made five saves.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 21, when they host Pitt-Bradford for another non-conference game at 3 p.m.
