HENRIETTA, N.Y.—Hobart College senior
Connor Rehbaum scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Statesmen to an 83-73 Liberty League men's basketball win over the Rochester Institute of Technology in Clark Gym tonight. Hobart sank a season-high 13 3-pointers against the Tigers.
Rehbaum was 10-of-19 from the floor, 5-of-11 from behind the 3-point arc, and 5-for-5 at the free throw line. He also shared team-high honors with nine rebounds. Senior
Andrew Hoy added 11 points and a team-high four assists. Five other Statesmen produced between seven and nine points in the game, including junior
Domonique Petty-Fernander, who had eight points and nine rebounds.
RIT's A.J. Horde made a 3-pointer at the 11:44 mark to give his team its largest lead of the game, 19-17, but the Statesmen responded with a barrage of 3-pointers to reclaim the lead for good. Hobart went on a 17-3 run that saw Rehbaum score eight points with a pair of 3s, sophomore
Thomas Campion connect twice from long range, and first-year
Luke Ruddy connect once from distance. After Ruddy's triple, the Statesmen led 34-22 with 7:17 left until the half.
RIT scored the game's next 10 points to get within two, but Hobart outscored the Tigers 7-5 over the final three minutes to end the half with a 41-37 lead. Horde led all scorers at the break with 20 points.
In the second half, RIT trimmed its deficit to two, 49-47, on a layup by Joe Stortini with 14:09 to go. Rehbaum quelled the threat with back-to-back 3-pointers, but the Tigers continued to hang around. Hobart's lead was just five with less than eight minutes remaining, but RIT lost its shooting touch for a nearly five minute span that saw the Statesmen score 15 points to the Tigers 1. While Hobart went 6-for-8 from the floor during the run, RIT missed six straight shots. By the time the Tigers snapped out of their funk, the Statesmen lead was 19 and remained in double digits for the rest of the contest.
Horde scored just four points in the second half to finish with a team-high 24. Kamron Davis added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Hobart (7-5, 2-1) shot 44 percent from the floor, including an impressive 13-of-26 from 3-point range, and a near perfect 14-of-15 from the free throw line. The Statesmen had a 40-39 rebounding edge and made three fewer turnovers.
RIT (7-6, 2-3) shot 42 percent from the floor, 36 percent from behind the arc, and 62 percent at the line.
Hobart returns to action on Friday, Jan. 16, when the Statesmen host Vassar College. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 8 p.m.
