Herons fall at 2nd place Saints

CANTON, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team lost at St. Lawrence University 67-50 in a Liberty League contest in Berkman Gym tonight. The Saints used a 44-36 rebounding advantage and made seven more 3-pointers (9-2) than the Herons to pick up their sixth straight win.

St. Lawrence scored the first 5 points of the game and never relinquished its lead. The Saints took control of the game with 13 straight points over a seven-minute span in the middle of the first half. Kara McDuffee capped the run with a layup that put the home team up 23-9. She led St. Lawrence with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Saints led by as many as 17 in the opening 20 minutes before carrying a 34-19 lead into halftime. SLU shot 38 percent from the floor with four 3-pointers while holding William Smith to 31 percent shooting. The Herons' struggles were compounded by senior Chloe Hayter and sophomore Gabrielle Eure playing just eight minutes each due to foul trouble.

The Herons cut their deficit to 12 four times in the second half, the last time on a layup by senior Ali Pliszka with 7:59 remaining. St. Lawrence put the game away with eight of the next nine points to stretch their lead to 56-37 with just 5:34 to play.

Pliszka led William Smith with 11 points and eight rebounds. Hayter added 10 points and six boards. She raised her career scoring total to 1,164, passing Trena Sutton '88 (1,155), Marisa Vespa '08 (1,157), and Kristen Kush '12 (1,163) to move into 12th place on the Herons' career scoring list.

For the Saints, Allison Cady and Cara Waterson joined McDuffee in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Herons (3-13, 2-6) will wrap up their current four-game road trip at Clarkson (13-5, 6-3) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31.
