#25 Hobart hosts WPI for Homecoming

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 25th-ranked Hobart College football team will host Liberty League rival WPI on Saturday, Oct. 3 on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. Kickoff for the Homecoming and Family Weekend game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Statesmen (3-1, 1-0) are coming off a 30-15 Liberty League win at Merchant Marine last week. Hobart jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never trailed the Mariners on the way to the program's 23rd consecutive conference win. Sophomore quarterback Thomas Sydeski threw for 126 yards and two touchdowns while senior running back Conner Hartigan ran for a season-high 76 yards and a TD. The Statesmen also got a TD from special teams, when senior Jacob Stanley blocked a punt and junior Todd Collier recovered it and raced 41 yards for a third quarter touchdown.

Hobart's defense has been dominant through the first four games of the season. The Statesmen are seventh in the nation in total defense, allowing just 201.0 yards per game. Hobart is also among the top defensive squads in passing efficiency defense (4th, 69.92), passing yards allowed (5th, 101.3), third down conversion defense (5th, .190), and turnovers gained (24th, 10). The Statesmen run defense is "only" 45th in the country, allowing 99.8 yards per game.

The Engineers (3-1, 0-1) aim to rebound from a 28-21 loss to RPI in their league opener. WPI has the Liberty League's top passing offense, averaging 269.3 yards per game. Senior quarterback Dan Eckler has completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 1,077 yards and seven touchdowns with only three interceptions. Junior wide receiver Brandon Eccher is his top target. He leads the league in receptions (23) and receiving yards (426).

This will be the 12th meeting between Hobart and WPI. The Statesmen have won each of the previous 11 games, including last season's 28-14 contest in Worcester, Mass.

Tickets are $5 for general admission, $2 for children 12 and under. Parking in the Boswell Field lot is reserved for Statesmen Athletic Association members only.

The game will be broadcast on WEOS-FM (89.5/90.3 in Geneva). Fans can also watch the game in HD online.
