SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The sixth-ranked William Smith College Field Hockey team slipped past Union 3-2 in a Liberty League contest this afternoon. Junior
Alessandra Patrizio scored twice and added an assist in the second half for a game-high five points as the Herons collected their 12th win of the season.
William Smith (12-1, 3-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Patrizio notched her 17th goal of the year. She let a slapper go from the top of the arc to beat the Dutchwomen goalie. Eight minutes later Hannah Christian tied the game at one. She collected a rebound and tucked the shot just inside the left post.
Patrizio put the Herons back out in front in the 27th minute. First-year
Fallon Adair collected her own rebound and slid a pass to Patrizio who was waiting on the right post to redirect the shot into the back of the cage.
Christian scored her second of the game in the 55th minute to tie things up at two for Union (5-8, 0-4). She redirected a shot from Bretta Beer past William Smith goalie

Sophomore
Hannah Wood scored the game winner in the 65th minute. She collected a pass from Patrizio and buried a shot for her team-leading 20th goal of the season. Wood now has 42 career goals, one behind Annie Kietzman '12 and Sheila McKevitt '02 for 10th in career goals as a Heron. She also needs six points to become the 14th player to reach the 100-point plateau.
Junior
Biz Chirco got the start in goal and made two saves in 54:53 of playing time. Sophomore
Emily King played the final 15:07 and didn't see any action. Laura Aptowitz played all 70 minutes in goal and stopped 11 shots for the Dutchwomen.
William Smith dominated the stat sheet outshooting Union 25-6 and earning 10 penalty corners to the Dutchwomen's three.
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 17, when they host Cortland in a non-conference game on McCooey Field.
