Game Recap: William Smith Soccer |

Shue scores twice, Herons defeat Vassar 3-0

The No. 6 William Smith College soccer team scored two first half goals 18 seconds apart and added another in the second half to down Vassar 3-0 in a Liberty League game played in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., this afternoon. It was the Herons' ninth straight shutout victory.

William Smith improves to 10-1-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the Liberty League. It was the Herons' 10th total shutout of the season. The Brewers are now 7-4-2 and 1-1-2 in conference play.

The Herons started the scoring on Gordon Field with two quick goals in the 20th minute. Junior Brie Ruane notched the first goal of the game off a cross from classmate Shay Callahan on the left wing at the 19:38 mark. It was Ruane's fourth goal of the year. William Smith immediately regained possession off the restart and senior Krista Longo put a through ball into the 18-yard box to find an open Kara Shue. Shue finished into the right corner of the net to give the Herons a 2-0 advantage just 18 seconds later.

Shue posted her second goal of the day in the 77th minute. After winning the ball off a defender in the box, she had an open look at the net and fired a shot into the left side. It was Shue's fifth goal of the season and she now leads the Herons with 15 points.

William Smith finished with a 27-4 advantage in shots and a 5-0 lead in corners. First-year goalkeeper Kaileen Murray played all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons and stopped the lone shot she faced to secure her eighth shutout of the season. Emma Nichols played the entire match in goal for the Brewers and made eight saves.

William Smith is back in action tomorrow, Oct. 16, when it travels to take on Bard in another Liberty League contest at 2 p.m.
