#6 Herons soar over Raptors, clinch Liberty League playoff berth

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked William Smith College soccer team clinched a spot in the four-team Liberty League Tournament with an 8-0 win at Bard College this afternoon. The Herons 10th consecutive win was also their 10th consecutive shutout.

Senior Krista Longo led the way with her second hat trick in the past eight days. First-year Sarah Olick-Sutphen added a goal and a season-high three assists. Junior Brie Ruane chipped in a pair of goals and first-year Megan Barwick had a goal and an assist.

Ruane opened the scoring in the seventh minute. A long cross to the far side of the Bard box was one-touched by junior Shay Callahan right to Ruane on the doorstep, who put it away.

The Herons (11-1-1, 6-0-0 Liberty) scored three times in just over six minutes to break the contest open. Longo took a short feed from sophomore Theresa Lohr to make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute. In the 26th minute, Olick-Sutphen made a long run down the right side and cut toward the near post before feeding Longo in front.

Olick-Sutphen made it 4-0 in the 28th minute off a long ball into the box from sophomore Katherine Campbell.

Junior Lauren Randaccio sent the visitors into the break with a 5-0 lead, scoring her fifth goal of the season in the 40th minute.

Ruane, Longo and Barwick scored for William Smith in the second half.

First-year Kaileen Murray got the win in goal, making one save. She lowered her goals against average to an impressive 0.09. First-year Veronica Romines made two saves in the second half.

The eight goals are the most scored by William Smith since notching eight against Pitt-Bradford on Sept. 21, 2014. The Herons were also credited with seven assists against the Raptors, giving them 23 points on the day, the most by a William Smith squad since notching 26 in a 9-0 win over Clarkson on Oct. 13, 2001.

The Herons return home to host Clarkson (7-5-1, 0-4-1) on Saturday, Oct. 24.
